Spring is knocking at our doors and soon flowers will be blooming, but the season is not the only thing that is soon to change. People also spring clean their lives round about this time of the season, wanting to clear out the Winter cobwebs and start a fresh – so to speak.

Whether it’s time to say goodbye to bad habits or certain relationships in our lives that were not good for us, or even clearing out our Winter wardrobe to suit a warmer Summer style. Another thing we should also consider clearing out is our make-up bags.

This means knowing which cosmetics to keep or toss. Eyeliner, specifically liquid eyeliner is a must have make-up item and obviously with the change of season, the make-up look and colours change. Colours to look out for that will be a definite must have in your make-up bag in the warmer season are bright – from a shocking orange matte lipstick to purple, blue and pastel eye shadows.

But before you throw out all of your last season’s make-up, here are some tips on what the shelf life of your pile of make-up is, so as to know what you can still keep or throw away with Extra tip sourced from About.com Beauty.

The most commonly known beauty product mascara expires the fastest only after four months. Extra tip: If you don’t want your mascara to expire faster than its fresh date, don’t pump the wand in and out, you’re only exposing the product to air causing it to dry out.

Lipstick if it smells bad, throw it out, it’s spoiled. Extra tip: If you store lipstick in the refrigerator, it will last longer. Bonus tip: Want your lipstick to last longer during the day? Shade in your lips with lip liner before applying lipstick. Also lip liner can last up to three years. Extra extra tip: Skip the push-up lip liners. They’re expensive, tend to break and you never really know how much you have left until you run out.

Foundation, water-based will last up to 12 months, oil-based will last up to 18 months.Extra tip: If your water-based foundation dries out before its expiration date, simply add a few drops of alcohol-free toner and shake it to mix in. No need to do this to oil-based foundations because then the oil and toner will tend to separate.

Pencil eyeliner will last up to three years and should be sharpened regularly. Eye shadows also last up to three years, concealer up to 12 months and powder two years. While brushes you can wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent and sponges every week to discard monthly.

And now you know which make-up to incorporate in your look to keep fashion forward in the coming Summer season, but most importantly you know what to spring clean in your make-up bag to really get your face ready and fresh for Spring.
