The difference between can’t afford it, and can’t justify it

Insight: It is about perceived worth, justification and the role a product plays in someone’s life.
We often assume that when consumers say, “I can’t afford it,” the conversation is about price.
But sometimes, it isn’t.
Sometimes what the consumer is really saying is: “I can’t justify spending my money on it.”
There is an important difference.
In a tough economy, consumers become more deliberate about where their money goes. They may have less disposable income, but that doesn’t mean they stop spending. Instead, they become more selective about what they believe is worth paying for.
We see this every day.
A consumer may walk away from one product because it is “too expensive”, yet choose another product that costs more. They may cut back in one category while continuing to spend on something else they consider important.
Why?
Because affordability is not the only measure of value.
People justify purchases based on what something means to them. It might offer better quality, convenience, reliability, familiarity, status, enjoyment or simply the feeling that “this is worth it.”
This is also why, at certain times, consumers can still find room in their budgets for products that might appear unnecessary or indulgent. It isn’t necessarily because they have suddenly become more financially comfortable. It is because they have decided that, in that moment, the purchase is worth making.
The same principle applies to everyday brands.
Consumers aren’t always looking for the cheapest option. They are looking for the option that gives them a reason to spend.
And that creates an important challenge for brands.
When consumers are under pressure, competing purely on price can be a race to the bottom.
The better question is:
What are we giving consumers that makes choosing us worth it?
Because sometimes consumers don’t need more money to buy your product.
They simply need a better reason to justify it.
And that is where understanding the consumer becomes more important than simply understanding their wallet.
